2021 has been exhausting. I can’t watch as much movies and series as I wanted to. I was kind of busy trying to keep my self not plunging into the endless pit of depression (I’ve had those moments pretty much once every couple of months for the first half of 2021). But I’m still grateful being alive, and most importantly, being healthy, today.

2021 is pretty unique. I’ve watched a lot of movies and series that I really loved. So, in order to close this year properly, I’m gonna tell you some of the best things I’ve watched in 2021.

Hopefully, we’re all gonna see a whole lot more awesome things in the future. Happy new year, and cheers! (This list is not in a particular order.)

Movies:

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home

Of course it’s gotta be on the list. Best MCU’s Spider-Man’s movie. Definitely number 2 below Spider-Man 2.

  • West Side Story

Just so happy finally able to watch a good musical again on the big screen. While watching it alone in the theater. Never thought Steven Spielberg could make a musical. But here it is.

  • The Mitchells vs The Machines

Easily one of the best animated movies I’ve watched for a while.

  • Spencer

Damn, Kristen Stewart…..

  • Dune

The visuals alone was to die for. Rebecca Ferguson x Timothee Chalamet = perfection.

  • Annette

Seeing Adam Driver singing for about 2 hours definitely worth it.

  • Losmen Bu Broto

PUTRI MARINOOOOOOOOO.

  • Tick, Tick… BOOM!

Shouldn’t have watched it while having an existential crisis. But Andrew Garfield, damn, no idea he could sing that way.

  • Yuni

PRIDOM ABIS!

  • Vengeance is Mine, All Others Pay Cash

Oh to be able to dance along the dangdut Pantura like Ajo, Iteung, and Tokek did.

  • Mimi

Taught me a lot about being a mom is bigger than just being pregnant and giving birth to a child. It’s a commitment of a lifetime.

  • Ali dan Ratu Ratu Queens

Never thought that Tika Panggabean, Asri Welas, Nirina Zubir, and Happy Salma could be such an amazing ensemble.

  • Zack Snyder’s Justice League

FINALLY, THE PROPER TREATMENT FOR DC’s JUSTICE LEAGUE.

  • Language Lessons

Intimate, deep conversations through Zoom. Really defined the pandemic in an awesome way.

  • Georgia

Cried for a while in the middle of the day because of this.

  • Yang Tak Tergantikan

Really proves that one of my weaknesses is a good, warm, family movie.

  • Pieces of a Woman

VANESSA KIRBY REIGN OF SUPREMACY.

  • Promising Young Woman

One of the most important films in 2021.

  • Minari

ALAN KIM!!!!

  • Great Freedom

Depressing, yet beautifully told.

  • The Last Duel

There are some ways to see something. He said, she said, and the actual truth. Jodie Comer is everything.

  • Little Big Women

Delicate and beautiful, yet complex family conflicts. Really warmed my heart.

  • Man in Love

Watch this if you want a good rom-com turned melodrama movie.

  • Free Guy

I don’t expect this to be this good!

  • The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart

Well, it’s the Bee Gees, sooooo….

  • Capernaum

Fuck the adults who keep having kids despite their inability to take care of them.

  • Manchester by the Sea

Not all people able to overcome their grief. And that’s okay.

Series:

  • Maid

Best series in 2021. Its complex, yet realistic story gave me so many emotion through out its run. Damn, Margaret Qualley.

  • Loki

Love yourself at its finest. If Loki really able to fall in love with someone, well, it must be himself, or rather, herself.

  • WandaVision

It’s so fun!!! Best MCU series so far.

  • Modern Family

Finally able to finished the entire series after months of binge-watching. Hilarious, yet really warmed my heart.

  • A Teacher

One of the things I loved about this, they didn’t romanticize the student-teacher relationship. Rather gave it a detail look on how it affected them in a very realistic way.

  • Sex Education S3

They gave the best character development ever in a show.

  • Superman and Lois S1

I didn’t expect too much on a CW series, but damn, Superman and Lois really surpassed my low expectations. It was so good!

  • Transplant

A new medical series, and it was so great! Great story, great characters.

  • My Name

The first K-Drama that I finished. Yep, it was that good.

  • Atypical

One of the best. Sam and Casey’s relationship was so precious.

  • Community

Loved the 1st-3rd seasons. While the rest were never should’ve been made.

  • Bridgerton

Shondaland handling a victorian drama. Well, of course it was emotional and super steamy. Man, the dramaaaaa!!!

Well, that’s it I guess. I know that I didn’t watch as many movies as I wanted to. But I’m just grateful to survive this year. Let’s to hoping Covid would be gone really soon.
